چکیده
It has been contemplated for a long time that dense granular materials flow in stick-slip manner, and large fluctuations the stresses are associated with it. However, particle scale mechanics this type of macroscopic motion not understood so far. We have analyzed evolution contact networks from dynamics simulations found rate change elastic energy packing can distinguish stick regimes slip events. The isostatic criterion (number contacts minimally stable particle) used to construct cascade failure mechanism which reveals effect random breaking due applied shear be system-spanning some cases. size failures follows power law explains experimentally observed is stresses. expect distribution connect microstructure its mechanical response.

Dilatancy in slow granular flows.
When walking on wet sand, each footstep leaves behind a temporarily dry impression. This counterintuitive observation is the most common illustration of the Reynolds principle of dilatancy: that is, a granular packing tends to expand as it is deformed, therefore increasing the amount of porous space. Although widely called upon in areas such as soil mechanics and geotechnics, a deeper understan...
متن کاملParticle diffusion in slow granular bulk flows
We probe the diffusive motion of particles in slowly sheared three-dimensional granular suspensions. For sufficiently large strains, the particle dynamics exhibits diffusive Gaussian statistics, with the diffusivity proportional to the local strain rate —consistent with a local, quasistatic picture. Surprisingly, the diffusivity is also inversely proportional to the depth of the particles below...
متن کاملSlow Dense Granular Flows as a Self-induced Process
Received (received date) Revised (revised date) A simple model is presented for the description of steady uniform shear ow of granular material. The model is based on a stress uctuation activated process. The basic idea is that shear between two particles layers induces uctuations in the media that may trigger a shear at some other position. Based on this idea a minimum model is derived and app...
متن کاملMicromechanics of emergent patterns in plastic flows
Crystalline solids undergo plastic deformation and subsequently flow when subjected to stresses beyond their elastic limit. In nature most crystalline solids exist in polycrystalline form. Simulating plastic flows in polycrystalline solids has wide ranging applications, from material processing to understanding intermittency of earthquake dynamics. Using phase field crystal (PFC) model we show ...
متن کاملGranular Flows
Those who have played with sand on the beach or with sugar in their kitchen are aware that a collection of solid grains can behave macroscopically like a liquid and flow. However, the description of this peculiar fluid still represents a challenge due to the lack of constitutive laws able to describe the rich phenomenology observed. In this paper we first review the properties of dry granular f...
